Deep Purple and Elf – The relationship that led to the creation of Rainbow

🎸 The relationship between the American band Elf (led by Ronnie James Dio) and the British rock giants Deep Purple is one of the most important chapters in rock history. This collaboration not only boosted Dio's career but also led to the creation of the legendary band Rainbow.

In 1972, Elf were looking for a major recording contract. At that time, they were noticed by bassist Roger Glover and drummer Ian Paice – key members of Deep Purple. Impressed by their vocalist (who at the time still played bass and signed as Ronald Padavona), Glover and Paice decided to support them. Soon they offered to produce Elf's debut album, which was released the same year under Deep Purple's own label – Purple Records.

🎤 Between 1972 and 1975, Elf were almost entirely a supporting band for Deep Purple. During this period, they performed over 50 concerts worldwide. The relationship between the two bands was excellent, close, and mutually respectful – in stark contrast to the tense atmosphere that usually prevailed within Deep Purple itself.

🔥 Particularly strong influence on Dio was exerted by Deep Purple's guitarist – Ritchie Blackmore. He was fascinated by Dio's talent and saw in him the ideal lyricist he was looking for. The chemistry between them was so strong that when Blackmore decided to leave Deep Purple in 1975, he brought in the musicians from Elf to form his new band Rainbow.

🎶 Blackmore acted as a mentor to Dio. He produced Elf's three studio albums and even invited him to participate in his solo project The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast (1974).

🍾 During a tour in the UK, Warner Brothers organized a lavish banquet in Coventry to present Deep Purple with around 50 gold records. The members of Elf were also invited. According to Dio himself, years later in an interview, the musicians from Elf, surrounded by such luxury and an open bar, drank themselves into oblivion, creating comical situations in front of their English idols.

💿 Former Elf manager Doug Taylor shared in an interview with Classic Rock that Elf's original music was closer to blues rock and boogie-woogie. It was the long tours, night after night, that shaped and directed Dio's voice toward heavy metal.

🎥 In December 1974, during a break from the US tour, Blackmore entered the studio to record a solo single. He invited Dio to perform the vocals. The session went so quickly and with such inspiration (the album was completed in just three weeks) that it became the decisive factor for Blackmore to leave Deep Purple's classic lineup and forever change the course of hard rock.
