Cozy Powell is one of the most impressive drummers in the history of rock music. If John Bonham is an earthquake, and Ian Paice is a racing car, then Cozy Powell is a rocket – explosive, fast, and unstoppable. He is the man who showed that drums can be both extremely powerful and incredibly fast.
Colin Flooks – known as Cozy Powell – was born in 1947 in Cirencester, England. He got the nickname 'Cozy' because of his curly hair. His career spanned five decades, and he played with some of the biggest names in rock music – Rainbow, Whitesnake, Black Sabbath, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, and many others.
Cozy Powell is known for his incredible speed and power. He is one of the first drummers to use double bass in a more extreme way. His playing is aggressive, energetic, and filled with drama. He understood that drums are not just a rhythmic instrument – they are a means of creating tension and emotion.
His style is built on a combination of rock, hard rock, and heavy metal, with influences from jazz and classical music. He has exceptional control over dynamics – he can be almost whisper-quiet and within seconds transition to deafening power.
Double bass is one of his trademarks. He uses it in a way that was revolutionary for its time – not just for accents but as the primary driver of the rhythm. This strongly influenced later metal drummers like Dave Lombardo and Charlie Benante.
His sound is massive and aggressive, with a huge bass drum and bright cymbals. He used Ludwig, Tama, and Pearl kits with Paiste cymbals. His sound is so powerful that it literally 'cuts through' the instruments in the dense guitar wall of Rainbow and Black Sabbath.
Among his greatest performances are Dance with the Devil – his breakthrough, one of the first drum solos to become a hit; Rainbow – Stargazer – an epic performance combining power and complexity; Whitesnake – Still of the Night – shows his ability to combine heavy rhythms with melodic elements; Black Sabbath – Headless Cross – a demonstration of his weight and control; and Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Fanfare for the Common Man – where he shows his classical side.
Cozy Powell's influence on hard rock and heavy metal is enormous. He is one of the drummers who laid the foundations of modern metal drumming. His double bass technique, powerful attack, and stage presence inspired generations of drummers.
For objectivity – Cozy Powell is not as compositionally complex as Neil Peart and not as experimental as Terry Bozzio. But his strength is in energy, power, and the ability to turn every performance into a spectacle.
Tragically, Cozy Powell died in a car accident in 1998, but his legacy remains. If John Bonham is an earthquake, Ian Paice is a racing car, and Neil Peart is a cathedral, then Cozy Powell is a rocket – fast, powerful, and unstoppable. He is the man who showed that drums can be the star of the show.
