Drummers

Charlie Benante

← Gene Hoglan Dave Lombardo →

If Lombardo is the storm, then Charlie Benante is the precision machine. Lombardo makes the drums sound like an attack. Benante turns them into a perfectly tuned engine that can be simultaneously fast, heavy, and extremely precise.

Charles Lee Benante was born in 1962 in the Bronx, New York. He is best known as the drummer of the legendary thrash metal band Anthrax, alongside Scott Ian, Dan Spitz, Joey Belladonna, and Frank Bello.

In the great 'Big Four' of thrash metal – Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax – each band has its own character. Metallica – epicness and compositions. Slayer – aggression and speed. Megadeth – complexity and technical riffs. Anthrax – energy, rhythm, speed, and very strong groove. And behind this sound stands Charlie Benante.

Benante started as a fan of John Bonham, Neil Peart, Phil Collins, and Clive Burr (Iron Maiden). But he was most strongly influenced by Rush. This is felt in his love for complex rhythms, unconventional transitions, and carefully built drum parts.

His great strength is the combination: speed, cleanliness, and musicality. Many thrash drummers focus primarily on aggression. Benante has always been more compositional. He doesn't just 'play fast' – he arranges the song through the drums.

He is one of the drummers who popularized fast double bass, constant fast rhythms, and complex transitions. Precision is his trademark – in very fast parts, he maintains evenness, clarity, and control. Benante is known for exceptionally beautiful fills – he uses the toms as a melodic instrument.

Benante is a big fan of Bill Ward, and this can be heard. He is not just a 'fast thrash drummer' – he has a sense of weight and blues. Double bass is one of his strengths, but unlike some extreme drummers, he doesn't use speed constantly – he uses it as part of the composition. His hands are phenomenal – many drummers consider his hands one of his greatest strengths.

Among his greatest performances are Indians – a perfect example of power, groove, and memorable rhythm; Caught in a Mosh – his calling card, with an incredible combination of speed, syncopation, and energy; and Among the Living – a thrash classic where the drums are the engine of the entire song.

For objectivity – Benante is not as revolutionary as Neil Peart, Ginger Baker, or John Bonham. He didn't change the very language of drums. But in his genre, he is among the absolute masters.

Charlie Benante is one of those drummers who prove that speed and precision can be beautiful. He is not the loudest, he is not the most extreme, but he is one of the most reliable and technically perfect drummers in the history of thrash metal. If Dave Lombardo is fire and fury, then Charlie Benante is the blade – fast, precise, and merciless.
